Was it the sunshine? Was it the fast track? Perhaps it was the lucky punters? Whatever the reasons, Wellington Cup 2013 at Trentham on Saturday was superb.

It is 363 days since the last Wellington Cup, which means we are about due for another one.

I met with a potential new client today. She wants a make-over, a revive, a lift. We talked about her goals, her weight loss and more importantly her self esteem. I asked her about these things because while most of my clients book me because they want to look better, little do they know the work I do is not merely about appearance. It goes much deeper than that.
That got me thinking about what I’d like to give Kiwi women as a gift for Christmas:
The gift of abundant self esteem.

Summer heralds not only bbq season, but it is also the advent of party season, race season and wedding season. And, much like cooking on the bbq, when getting ready for a big event, the dressing is all important. For the flavour is in the garnishes and the seasonings.

I remember being glued to the television as a youngster watching the Miss Universe pageants with absolute admiration and awe. Selecting my own winners for each category and being hypnotised by the grace and elegance of what seemed to me to be the most beautiful women in the world.

I can now add guinea pig to my resume. ‘Human guinea pig’ or perhaps ‘official beauty product tester’. Over the last three days I have been sampling a real life, brand new, never been seen before beauty product.

Every rose does have its thorn. I have about 22 rose bushes in my garden. Each year they supply me with hundreds of glorious blooms. But when I do the math I realise that this must rapidly multiply into thousands thorns for me to dodge in my garden. A scary thought.

When I am booked by a magazine to style people appearing in an article, I often don’t know who it is until a few days before. It can be anyone from everyday kiwis, to famous musicians, comedians, TV personalities, authors, celebrities, actors, or politicians, sometimes local or nationally famous and occasionally the odd lnternational megastar just to mix it up a bit. You just never know who might be the subject of the article.

I love how as Kiwis we get teased for the way we butcher/pronounce vowels. I have recently begun learning Italian, that most romantic and passionate of languages spoken in Italy.

Today was the first day of the second ever New Zealand Chocolate Festival in Wellington. The Chocolate Festival is such a winner of an idea that I can't quite believe that nobody thought of it before! We have fashion, wine, art, jewellery, music, farming, beer, and harvest festivals, so this was long overdue. Plus it is quite possible that out of that list, the Chocolate Festival could become my firm favourite.

Last night at a glittering and glamorous event hosted by Rydges I was the co-MC and fashionista du jour of the Mid-Winter Charity Ball. It was my task to select the best dressed winners from the crowd and to help the silent auctions and raffles flow alongside radio personality Justin Rae.

As we welcome Spring to the Southern Hemisphere we can look to the Northern Hemisphere for fashion inspiration. While we have been stylishly wrapped up in thermals, merino, puffer jackets and Ugg boots they have been enjoying wearing the very latest summer styles. Now it is our turn to pick up their fashion cues and run with the top three trends for our Spring.

Ballet is many things to many people. To some it is a bore, or even (gasp) a chore that your friend or family member drags you to against your will. For others is it a calling, a lifestyle, their heart song and the ultimate achievement in performing arts.

Texture has become the new hot thing to be seen in and no texture is more dramatic than lace. Made famous in the 80’s by Madonna and Prince, again in the 2010’s by Taylor Swift and Emma Watson and iconically by Kate Middleton. Don’t let those infamous examples fool you though because lace isn’t all about rock n’ roll, sex appeal or marriage vows.

Fringe benefits is not simply a fun play on words about having a fringe, there really are many upsides to cutting one in.

Sometimes I get given the chance to attend new movie previews. This is incredibly awesome when they are good movies. It is also absolutely horrendous when they are bad.

It was every commitment phobics worst nightmare: 19 brides in one room. Hairspray, bobby pins, lip-gloss, bronzer and rescue remedy were their weapons of choice.

From a composer who has worked with Dior to a choreographer who is currently the face of an Yves Saint Laurent men’s cologne it is impossible to attend Royal New Zealand Ballets triple bill NYC and ignore the fashion.

I took my chances queuing for ‘Tix for twenty’ in the last week of the NZ Festival. After an hour of queuing and freezing my a$$ off lady-luck proved not to be on my side that day. Bitch. However by the time I threw in the towel and admitted defeat I had caught a bad case of Festival Fever.

For some unknown 'to my conscious mind' reason I often find myself baking at night. Tonight is one of those nights.
I am baking (if you can call it that) CHOCOLATE CRACK.

The idea of wearing white clothing is enough to make most of us shiver in fear. It is not so much the clothing item as the whiteness itself and the thought of expertly maintaining that pure whiteness that sends us into a tail spin.

The pulse quickens, you begin to sweat, you lose the power of coherent speech and the softest touch sends shivers up your spine. It sounds like an illness, but don’t call the Doctor just yet, you might just be in love.

Picture a wedding dress in your mind’s eye. Is it white? An off the shoulder number, perhaps a strapless bodice and floor length flowing full skirt? I bet it is exactly that dress. Because today’s modern bride seems to be stuck in a cookie cutter vortex of never ending repetitious strapless whiter-than-white tulle confections.
