I met with a potential new client today. She wants a make-over, a revive, a lift. We talked about her goals, her weight loss and more importantly her self esteem. I asked her about these things because while most of my clients book me because they want to look better, little do they know the work I do is not merely about appearance. It goes much deeper than that.

That got me thinking about what I’d like to give Kiwi women as a gift for Christmas:

The gift of abundant self esteem.

I remember being glued to the television as a youngster watching the Miss Universe pageants with absolute admiration and awe. Selecting my own winners for each category and being hypnotised by the grace and elegance of what seemed to me to be the most beautiful women in the world.

Every rose does have its thorn. I have about 22 rose bushes in my garden. Each year they supply me with hundreds of glorious blooms. But when I do the math I realise that this must rapidly multiply into thousands thorns for me to dodge in my garden. A scary thought.

Last night at a glittering and glamorous event hosted by Rydges I was the co-MC and fashionista du jour of the Mid-Winter Charity Ball. It was my task to select the best dressed winners from the crowd and to help the silent auctions and raffles flow alongside radio personality Justin Rae.

The pulse quickens, you begin to sweat, you lose the power of coherent speech and the softest touch sends shivers up your spine. It sounds like an illness, but don’t call the Doctor just yet, you might just be in love.

Everywhere I look around my friends are getting married. I don’t know whether to blame it on ‘the whispers of the trees or the thunder of the seas’ but I have been the happy recipient of many wedding invitations for summer.

I feel the need to get something off my chest. (sigh) Here goes…. I have been known sometimes in the past, very occasionally, to feel and to exhibit extreme signs of road rage. From time to time I have felt the need to curse, to gesticulate, to honk my horn and to generally to act in a way that I am not very proud of when my mind becomes once again sane and rational (when I am off the road).

I believe all Mums have a Yummy Mummy hiding within. Often she is kicking and screaming to get out. The biggest block to realising her magnificence is finding the time to make manifest the Yummy Mummy persona when the world now revolves around a helpless tiny being. How to you get the balance between self care and baby? How do you even find the time?

Someone once told me that being a mother is akin to having your heart run around outside of your body.

I have moved through feeling helpless and hopeless about the Christchurch earthquake, today I feel excited and motivated because I have had an idea of how I can help, it has come to fruition thanks to the generous support of many many people and I hope to see you there.

It is midnight and the biggest natural disaster to hit NZ is just over 24 hours old.

Christchurch is in ruins. Death and destruction dominate the news.
